I don’t understand all of the hate toward the MacBook Air. I think it’s a kick-ass product.
I don’t know about you but I don’t need to drive a Hummer to the grocery store to buy milk. Moreover, the Air is to Apple what the Miata is to Mazda. The Miata isn’t the fastest car nor is it the most fuel efficient car Mazda makes. The Miata certainly doesn’t have the capacity of the other cars Mazda makes. Yet it is one of the pricier models that Mazda sells.
Just because the Air doesn’t meet everyone’s needs doesn’t mean it’s a junky system. I don’t think the Air is Apple’s next Cube. I believe there is a real market for the Air and I for one will look at it when I go to replace my 12†iBook. Physical size and weight is the reason why I bought my 12â€, not price, not power. I don’t need power and ports and drives to do email and surf.
I don’t have an issue with the battery. I never switch out my iBook battery and 5 hours is great. If I wanted 5 hours out of a Sony Vio, VAIO I’d need to carry 2 extra batteries with me everywhere. I don’t have an issue with the hard drive size. My iBook has an 80GB hard drive with 30GB of free space on it. I keep most of my favorite music on it along with all of my digital photos. I also have all of my applications including all of CS3 and tons of files.
Finally I don’t have an issue with the price. Of course I’d prefer to pay less but I want less. Sometimes for some people LESS is MORE. Granted the Air would not be my primary system, but I don’t think I’m the only person on the planet who might want one. So just because the MacBook Air isn’t what you hoped for from MacWorld 2008 doesn’t mean it’s not a great system, it just may not be for you. So don’t take it so personally.
Even if the MacBook Air isn’t for you, you should be happy about is this glimpse into the future that the MacBook Air is showing us. Because the next version of the MacBook and MacBook Pro will certainly adopt many of the Air’s technology as we move forward. So if you need those ports, and power at a lower price… Good news, it’s on the way.
