What will happen to the Mac Mini?

If you read all of the Mac blog, news, and rumor sites, you have seen all of the speculation about what will happen to the Mac Mini.

Some think it will be upgraded to faster processors. This makes sense. It is the slowest of the current Macs, and is due for a speed boost.

Others think it will be discontinued. No more Mac Mini. I don’t see this happening. Apple needs the Mac Mini to fill the under $1000 market.

I know several people that just bought one because it has more than enough power for their needs, and even with buying a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and upgrading to 1gb of memory it is cheaper than an iMac.

Here’s what I think. I can definitely see the speed bumps, along with larger hard drives.

I also think it will take on an even smaller form factor. Think about it. The AppleTV is thinner than the Mini, and it runs some form of OSX, has a hard drive, has ports. It just needs an optical drive and a few tweaks and it’s the new Mac Mini.

Maybe they’ll even change the name. I’m thinking the Mac Nano.
