Though I built an entire desk specifically to house a G5 (that particular prospect is looking unlikely, damn you to hell house payments) I’m starting to wonder about a new iMac. There’s some appeal, it’s going to be cheaper than a G5 (I’m betting, I could be wrong) and it will most likely come with a sweet built in screen. This is an appetizing prospect because I’ve got an old chunky ViewSonic monitor and I lust for a G5.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing lacking in my current set up (or rig for you hopelessly cool types). The monitor displays the information that the G4 instructs it to and all is right with the world. Except the monitor looks, well, PCish and the G4 is one less than a G5. ONE WHOLE DIGIT LESS. Plus I do a lot of processor intensive tasks, tasks that really bog down the old G4 and I need the speed of….. Hold it, that’s a lie. I don’t do a lot of processor intensive stuff. Heck I mostly word process and I can accomplish that with the lowliest of machines.
There are times when I do use the processor hungry apps, moments when I wait on my computer instead of the computer waiting for me. When I’m using FCP express a faster computer would be nice. Sure that’s a minority of the time and seems silly to yearn for a speedy G5 for such a trivial delay but THE G5 IS ONE MORE THAN A G4, and man, that is appealing. Plus the whole monitor thing. I’d get a slick flat panel and my neighbors would be envious, my wife would find me more attractive, I’d lose weight, feel better…wait that’s not right, that’s what those penis enlargement spams promise. Well I’d have a really cool flat panel monitor. So maybe an iMac will be a perfect fit.
Or maybe not, there are some things I’m going to need to push me over the edge, as noted above there’s nothing unworkable about my current system. To get me to reject the idea of a new powermac in a year or so and plunk down hard cash on a new iMac in September it’s going to have to have some features:
Very cool design. A lot of people this this is a given but it isn’t. See “cool design” is a personal thing and while I appreciated the original iMac and the Sunflower edition they just didn’t do a lot for me. I don’t see how Apple can improve over the last iMac design but they’ll need to if I’m going to buy the new iMac. Mainly cause I think the PowerMacs look effing great.
Two Firewire extreme ports. Why two? Well at some point I’ll probably want to add a hard drive, firewire is plenty fast for that but I also enjoy video editing (no really, I LIKE the editing part). Obviously I wouldn’t want to unplug the hard drive to do some video stuff. And nope a firewire hub won’t do it for me.
Why extreme? It’s EXTREME! plus it’s twice as fast as the mundane firewire. Not actually sure I could take advantage of the extra bandwidth…Did I mention it’s EXTREME?
Two usb ports. One for the still camera and one for the printer/scanner/car washer.
A really hideously over powered video card with video out. Why? You dare question ME? Oh wait, I’ve got that whole idiot thing going on. Well my reasoning is thus: Games are forever requiring more and more out of a video card. I hate the feeling when a game or something comes out and my computer can’t hack it. Even if I’m not interested in the game, it makes me feel obsolete. So i need the overkill video card to keep current with games I don’t play. The video out is a must, what if the monitor goes all wonky?
And that’s about it. Bitching looks, a few ports (some on the front please) and a killer video card. That’s not too much to ask is it?
On to…Listed Links of Langour Languishing for clicks…by Bailey.
Actually Bailey had nothing to do with these links, All these links were submitted by Tim Robertson, so blame him. Well that’s not strictly true, in fact it’s patently false. They’re just links dammit.
Game Pick #1: Dtunnel
The good: This game reminds me of Tunnel Hunt
The Bad: Everybody but me thought tunnel hunt sucked, even this guy and he invented the game. See Tunnel Hunt was repetitive, you flew down a tunnel shooting things that resembled tie fighters. Everything just kept going faster until you died. I saw this as a metaphor for the human condition and spent a massive number of quarters on the game. Others preferred the more philosophically challenging Burger Time.
Game Pick #2:D-Fence The Flash Game
Very involving, one of those games you start playing and then realize it’s time for lunch. But what the hell do you care? Nothing gets done on Monday morning anyway.
Excellent hyper kinetic flash animation It’s worth seeing.
