UnBox 14 – Targus for Mac

Now THAT is a big box! Large and rectangular. The company name on the box is Targus, who send me an email a while back about a new Mac Accessory Kit they had. I am guessing this is that!

Holy cow! Will you look at the size of this package! It’s like something a door-to-door salesman back in the 1950’s would carry around to show off samples. You don’t think Targus just recruited me to be a salesman for you, do you?

Check out all the stuff in here! You can’t really tell from the picture, but all the black around each product box is a velvet-like material. While it looks and feels nice, the black “fur” or “dust” from it has gotten all over the Targus packages. There are two Mice boxes, but one of the mice, which you can see in the above picture, is clear, except covered in the black velvet… stuff. It makes the mouse look like it needs a shave or something.

Starting from the bottom left, we see the Chill Mat. I have a MacBook Pro, the first generation, and let me tell you, that computer gets HOT. VERY hot. So hot, in fact, that after having in on my lap for extended periods of time, I told my wife not to worry about Birth Control. If you know what what I mean.

The Chill Mat sports dual fans, and plugs in to your Macs USB port. I look forward to testing it out!

Moving from left to right is the File Share Cable. I have never seen this before, but the website (Targus.com) says that you just plug in the Mac File Share Cable from one Mac to another, and an icon automatically appears on the desktop. Click the desktop icon to launch the dual file share window, and you are ready to drag-and-drop files. If it is indeed that easy, this could be a very cool product to own. Sure, you can always do the Firewire Target mode, but you first have to have Firewire on both machines (the new MacBooks don’t) and you are also looking at two reboots, one to set the target mode, one to reboot the machine. I am curious on ease of use and speed, so this will probably be the first thing I test.

Directly above the File Share Cable is the 4-port compact USB Hub. I honestly thought this was a mouse at first glance. For those of you who are in need of more USB 2.0 outlets for your Mac (and who isn’t?) this will give you more ports! It’s also very cool looking, about the size and shape of a Mac mouse.

Do you do presentations with your Mac? Say, in Keynote or PowerPoint? The Bluetooth Presenter could make your life much easier. It also has a Cursor mode, which sounds pretty self-explanatory. It is very sleek looking. It connects via Bluetooth, obviously, and works as both a pointer and a touch scroll as well. Cool!

Lastly, at the top-left of this huge case, is the Bluetooth Laser Mouse. The shape is very similar to the Apple mouse, and sports four way scrolling via touch sensitivity. It’s a mouse, and I always enjoy testing out a new mouse! Sometimes, right out of the box, a new mouse will just feel “right.” Oftentimes, they won’t. That also makes it very difficult to review mice, as so much depends on the size of the users hands, whether or not they are left or right handed, and how comfortable the mouse feels in the hand. In my review, I can tell you how the mouse felt to me, but that doesn’t mean it will feel the same to you.
