Before the big shopping day hits this Thursday here in the U.S., I need to get caught up on some UnBox episodes! It’s been killing me having unopened boxes just laying around, not knowing what’s inside!
First up today for UnBox 12: a long box that, having been around computers and computer gear as long as I have, I would have to guess is some sort of Keyboard.
Ah-ha! Correct on the first guess! It is the KeyRight Look & Learn Keyboard, which I have been reading some press on lately.
In this package is the actual keyboard and, attached to the outside of the box (an odd choice of packaging, but I kinda like it) is the interactive typing tutorial CD.
Without having actually used this yet (Hey, I am just unboxing a package here!) I have to comment on the very colorful keyboard. I assume it is laid out like this to help you learn to type. Very, very colorful.
Okay, so my five year-old daughter just asked “Daddy! You got me a keyboard computer! Can I play with it?” Remember, this is a keyboard and learning CD that teaches you to type. And if my five year-old daughter took one look at this keyboard and wanted to start using it, I think KeyRight has come up with a brilliant idea. Because, let’s be honest, there are a lot of people who have been using computers for years who still don’t know how to type well, pecking at the keys with two fingers. (Can you say Carpal tunnel?)
While this is not an Apple computer specific keyboard, it should work just fine with a Mac.
The company website for the software tutorial (which is Macintosh compatible) touts that the software avoids confusion by using only everyday words and syllables, and not nonsense exercises. (Like jumping jacks) It “Uses only positive multimedia feedback techniques.” Which is good, I hated that last learn-to-type software that gave me an electrical shock for every wrong keystroke. That sucked.
The KeyRight Look & Learn Keyboard feels sturdy and well-built. The throws feel familiar and comfortable. And it does not really cost much more than any other third-party keyboard.
