Pretty much as predicted, Apple has released the latest (yawn) version of the MacBook Pros and there is little difference asthetically from what they looked like before.
There are two base model 15-inch units running at 2.2 GHz with a 120gb hard drive for $1999 and a 2.4 GHz model with a 160 gb hard drive for $2499. The 17-inch model runs at 2.4 GHz with a 160 gb hard drive for $2799.
If you were waiting for the MacBook Pros to come out before making a purchase, then here you go! You can distinquish between the new models and the old by…um…whatever minor differences you can find. It’s kinda like telling the difference between a 1965 and 1966 Mustang. Both are highly desirable, but the actual differences are so small as to make almost no difference at all.
On Apple’s site, they make a big deal out of how much faster the new model is, but if you look closely you’ll notice they aren’t comparing the new MacBook Pro to the previous model. They compare it essentially to the 1st generation MacBook Pros. OK, it’s their ball and their bat so I suppose they can skew it any way they want.
Honestly, if you’re in the market for an Apple portable and you don’t already have an Intel MacBook Pro, do yourself a favor and save a few (ok, a LOT) of money and check out the refurbished Intel MacBook Pros. There are several being sold from Apple that are now under $1500. The question is; “Would you trade a few extra seconds of processing time to have over a 25% discount from a new MacBook Pro?” I know how I would answer.
