First I read about the Green Party vice presidential candidate announcing that
she is not even voting for herself and her running mate. She rather vote for
the person who has a greater chance of unseating George Bush.
Then quite recently, I read that the Dubya factor will even be bringing hardcore
anarchist to the polling booth. Attendees at the North American Anarchist Convergence
held at Ohio University 2 weeks ago debated a proposal to vote for the first
time in their lives in order to help defeat Bush in November.
Then last weekend it was the rally in New York which according to the news
spanned 20
blocks.
If I am basing it from these news reports, I would assume Bush is losing
his grip on the leadership and there is a growing anti-Bush sentiment in
the US. But yesterday I just read that Bush is even ahead by 4% over John
Kerry.
I once mentioned I would try to avoid politics as a topic….. particularly
American politics for reasons (1) I am not an American, so it is equivalent
to meddling (2) I am barely familiar with US Politics, (3) I am not directly
affected by it and discussing my views on the US would not really affect change
(4) I doubt most of the people who reads this even is interested in one politics
I am more familiar with, Canadian politics.
But when you are being forced fed from all media outlets of what essentially
is a US internal affair, I still can not help taking note. (And as I am writing
this, I could hear “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” playing in
my head)
This situation is actually giving me a sense of deja vu from the OJ Simpson
case. Prior to that trial, I do not even know who OJ Simpson is and I share
probably with the rest of the world that his “star value” outside
of the US is non-existent. But during the case, his name and his case has been
all over, thanx to CNN practically covering it “every hour on the hour
of every day”. I remember even BBC was picking it up. I ended up knowing
more than I would even care to know about OJ Simpson.
But such is the world influence of American affairs. Being the only super
power in the world now, US actions and events happening in there have a ripple effect on rest of
the world. The 911 incident has such an impact that even here in Vancouver,
business noticeably slowed down for the rest of that year. There is no more
check and balance on its decision, that crumbled with the crumbling of the
Soviet Union. The UN has no power to check and balance the US, as evident by
the Bush Administration still pushed through with the Iraq invasion despite
the disapproval of the UN.
I once read in an article that the US is currently a nation without a closure.
US citizens seem to be living in a limbo as they have no definite idea if a
Republican was rightfully elected or otherwise. And before you can even say, “Not
again!”, the upcoming election looks to be gearing to another quite close
race.
I know the first criteria in every American’s mind on this election is what
is best for their country. But as an outsider, I probably share with the rest
of the world, in hoping that whoever America chooses would lean towards a responsible
upholder of world order and peace.
Here is a game for you
Oh by the way, the above title is a quote from Aliens vs Predators… which is a “movie” currently showing in theatres around North America… not a “documentary” as one of the writers (*cough* Chris *cough) has erroneously referred to.
