Saw this article today wherein the author does a pretty good job of picking the top 5 Mac sites. Oddly enough I had been working on a entry along similar lines so I thought about just killing the idea. Then I noticed that the picks were not the same as mine, which meant they were awful (cause if you don’t agree with me you suck, commie swine).
Imagine a very contrived scenario where you could only navigate from one page per day. If you’re a Mac fan there would be no doubt the page would be Macsurfer, you get the entire gamut of Mac news and related stuff in one easily viewable list. On the other hand just because Macsurfer is the king-pimp-mac-daddy of all Mac websites that doesn’t mean there aren’t other really great sites to be perused. Below, in no particular order, are my fave Mac websites that aren’t Macsurfer:
(and yep I’m stealing a page from Maximum PC’s ratings, they keep sending me the stupid thing so they must want me to do something with it)
Not Macsurfer #1 News Source:
MacDailyNews
What’s so great: Lots of headlines, easy place to leave commentary, the macdailynews take can be sidesplitting.
Can’t relate: One opinion piece a month? C’mon SteveJack try two per month. Or add some staff, I know you guys are raking it in (they all drive Hummers and smoke Cuban cigars).
Not Macsurfer #1 personal opinion/tech advice site:
Daring Fireball
Daring Niceness: John Gruber says what’s on his mind and he knows his stuff. Plus he’s funny: “The .GlobalPreferences.plist File Can Bite Meâ€. The white on gray is very cool. If Jon Gruber were interviewed on Jim Rome he’d be Jon “Freaking” Gruber
Chilling Iceness: $30.72 for a t-shirt? It does include a one year membership, But still $30.72, not $31 or $30 or the ever popular $33.33? Most likely a three Mb(1024*3) t-shirt, but come on.. our check books crave round numbers…
Not Macsurfer #1 humor site:
Perversion Tracker
Custom Ride: Hi-effin-larious software reviews. I mean these things are brutal, and they kill me every single time. Even the logo slaughters. Take a look:
Plus they’ve got that fancy chicken thing going on.
Plastic slide: No complaints
Not Macsurfer #1 shopping site:
DealMac
Saves my cash: All kinds of deals updated constantly. Love the dealmac basement and the active forums.
Pains my ash: It’s a deal site so the boredom factor is right up there with The English Patient.
Not Macsurfer #1 performance site:
BareFeats
Rates my Mac: Plenty of numbers, zero spin
Makes me yak: I know graphs and those, Sir, are some ugly graphs.
Not Macsurfer #1 Apple History website:
The Apple Museum
Good old days: Comprehensive list of all thing manufactured by Apple, very easy to navigate.
Pain that stays: No commentary. I’d like to see comments from people who owned an Apple IIgs Woz edition.
Not Macsufer #1 non Mac site
iPodhacks
Crank the noise: There’s some really great hacks for all you iPod types out there.
Plays with toys: It’s not a Mac site. Hey, what’s it doing on this list anyway?
I didn’t post any links yesterday and I got a little bit of mail complaining about the omission. I’m sorry, so very sorry, about the lack of links. So have an eyeful with:
Bailey’s Bada$$ Blog Links of DOOM
The IQ test for the rest of us. You know Troglodytes like me.
If there’s ever been a better project for Vern I haven’t seen it.
Wooden Mirror
Cool news: Blue Whales Spotted off Alaska Actually the copy says “in Alaska” Which would be scary, a giant blue whale flopping around on the permafrost would be lethal, but it turns out the writer meant in the waters off Alaska
Excellent short flick: Bad Culture Video
