I have about a half dozen audio podcasts that I try to listen to on a regular basis, but I don’t like going through the Podcast library of iTunes to get at them. They’re mixed in with a bunch of old and new audio and audiovisual podcasts in which I have to search through to discover which podcasts have been updated. So I figured out how to create an iTunes Smart Playlist that captures all the audio podcasts that I haven’t listened to. After I listen to each of them, they get automatically removed from the Smart Playlist.
In order to create the audio podcast Smart Playlist, I had to create three different Smart Playlists because the iTunes Smart Playlist feature doesn’t have an “or” rule for creating Smart Playlist. So you can see why I had to create two playlists in order to create the third one which is the one I use to play the audio podcasts.
After completing these first two Smart Playlists, tuck them away into a folder, because you won’t really need click on them.
Name this Smart Playlist, “AAC audio files.”
Name this Smart Playlist, “MPEG audio files.” If you haven other kinds of audio files in your iTunes library, create additional Smart Playlists for each of those types of audio files.
This third Smart Playlist is based on the first two. Notice that with iTunes 7, you can use playlists as part of your rules.
Finally, name this Smart Playlist something, like “Current Audio Podcasts.”
