Skype is Hype, Run to Daylite

I don’t have time right now for a formal review,
but I did want to say something about some experiences
I’ve had with some software.

The Skype beta 1.5.x for Mac OS X that adds video has been a
problem on my system. Since it is in beta, I would suggest
that unless you are planning to become an energetic beta
tester, just skip it and stay with the 1.4.x audio version.

On the other hand, I have been testing a really cool Cocoa
application called Daylite.

Daylite

Essentially, the Apple Mail app integrated with Daylite gives
you the functionality of MS Entourage. If you’re allergic to
using a Microsoft e-mail program for mission critical work,
then you can achieve even more functionality with Daylite.

Note: Apple’s Mail app will only connect to an MS Exchange
server if the admin has enabled IMAP. Many hard-nosed
Exchange admins in the workplace turn that off and force their
users to use MAPI, Outlook or Entourage. If that’s the case
with you, you’re stuck with Entourage — which is a Carbon app.

(On the other hand, most ISPs use POP and IMAP, and then
you can use a wide variety of POP/IMAP clients.)

Daylite is elegant and fun. You know an application
is designed well when it’s actually fun to use. Daylite
isn’t exactly cheap while Entourage comes along with MS Office
for Macintosh. You make the call.

Personally, I like the look and feel of Entourage, but I’ve
heard stories about file corruption. Having had my own share
of total disasters with MS Word and PowerPoint corrupting my
files a few years ago, I’m going to play it safe and use
Mail.app and Daylite for a project that requires some serious
project, task, and contact management.

Daylite can be used at full functionality for a 30-day trial
period.

And if there is a feature you think is missing in the
Apple Mail.app, check below. You may find just what you need.
