Selling Like Hotcakes? Selling like Hotcakes????
Ahhhhhh! What is the etimology of this phrase and why are we still using it?
This expression seems to be used continually everywhere to describe run away success in sales, rampant popularity, etc., etc. ad nauseum.
It has been used by people around me at least a dozen times when talking about the fantastic sales of the iPods.
I do not understand this.
Who are these hotcake vendors? Do they have licenses to do so? Where are they selling these hotcakes everyone talks about being so popular? Do we see them on every street corner? Who is buying all these hotcakes anyway? Are you? Is anyone you know buying them?
I certainly am not interested in buying hotcakes. They aren’t Atkins friendly anyway. In fact, they don’t sound so appetizing to me. Do they come with syrup? Are they sold with powdered sugar coating? Or with fruit fillings? How about with butter or cream cheese?
This sounds like the popular pancakes that used to be sold on the streets of Moscow. Surely this isn’t where the term “selling like hotcakes” comes from, is it?
HOW ABOUT we all change this old fashioned, outdated and silly phrase!
Lets all being using the term “Selling Like iPods!” instead. . .
(end of rant)
