Quick report from Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show

John,

CES is underway today. The Las Vegas Convention Center is buzzing. Lots of techies, manufactures, resellers, etc. Every kind of phone, mp3 player, camera, speakers, monitors, memory sticks, networking device, smart home systems, car audio, home theater, just gadgets galore. All the PCs are running Microsoft Vista now. A lot of the Las Vegas cabs have a full car wrap Vista ad on them now. Intel and Microsoft had a massive exhibit. All the processors are double and quad core.

It’s a bit over whelming with the crowds. I had a nice lunch and listened to a panel of experts talking about IP. No not IP as in Internet Protocol but IP as in Intellectual Property. The Sony CTO talked about how the 8-29 year old crowd (Millennium kids) is totally digital now. All the content companies need to figure out how to provide and market the media they want or else. All of us old fogies are unfortunately analog and a declining breed.

The big theme is convergence. How to have access to all your media (video, photos, music) all the time on every platform. We aren’t there yet. All the gizmos are multipurpose now. Phones with Mp3 players and cameras. www.CNet.com has some nice coverage of the new and exciting gizmos from the LVCC South floor.

Unfortunately for me, I’m more interested in the business computer stuff / networking stuff and there isn’t as much of that in this show. I did find a company called Trusted Data with a very cool storage device with swappable hard disk. It is designed to protect your digital photos and Mp3s etc. The device is so simple a home user could dynamically add storage with no configuration in mere minutes. I want one too. It should be available soon.

All in all it was fun. Looking forward to being at home again. How is the MAC show? What’s the big news there?
