More on Psystar
Last weeks buzz story of a small company in south Florida selling vanilla computers with an option to install Apple’s Mac OS X, had become synonymous with fraud. Psystar’s payment processor had not walked, but ran away from the company forcing them to temporarily use PayPal as their payment conduit of choice. According to their website, they have secured a new company to handle those chores and a quick check of their online store shows that the page with payment information from their customers is now secured.
The Open Computer still has all the various options as discussed last week, with internals that are far better than what Apple includes in the Mac mini and in some cases that iMac. One glaring bit that’s still missing are wireless networking options though a page on Psystar’s site says that some are being tested and will be included as an option later. Obviously though who have already purchased PsyStar’s Open Computer and Open Computer Pro will be on their own for configuring wireless networking.
The musical addresses that was exposed by Endgadget has also taken a road much more traveled with at least a confirmed warehouse location and a sign out front proclaiming themselves to actually be a company called PsyStar. PsyStar claims that all orders will be shipped in the order that they were received and that customers will get an email with order status. As of the time this was written, still no computers from PsyStar with OS X are known to be in the wild.
Q: How soon do you think reports of Open Computers will show up (assuming this still isn’t a scam)?
Q: If this is legit, do you think many current Mac users would take a chance on PsyStar or do you think most early adopters will be new users or just the very curious?
Q: Apple has curiously made no announcements concerning this company. Why do you think that is?
Apple’s 2nd Quarter results are in
Apple’s 2nd quarter financials are in and they look pretty good. Over 2.2 million Macs, over 10 million iPods, and 1.7 million iPhones were sold between January 1st and March 31st of 2008. On the Mac side, this is the second biggest quarter ever for Apple and represents over a 50% increase in sales as compared to the 2nd quarter of last year. On the not as good news side, iPod sales remained relatively flat, and some analysts were disappointed in the number of iPhones sold, though Apple is still well on their way to reaching their goal of 10 million sold during the 2008 calendar year.
Gross margins remained flat at about 33% and total sales were projected to be about 7.2 billion dollars (43% increase) with a net profit of over a billion dollars (36% increase). Apple’s stock was up over 6 dollars a share at the end of Thursday the 24th, trading at $168.94, an increase of over 3 ½ percent.
Q: What could Apple do to increase interest in iPods?
Q: Will the rumored 2nd gen iPhone increase sales or are most people waiting for the SDK?
Q: Will Apple be able to keep sales high in a stagnant economy?
New iMacs coming?
Various reports around the internet claim that Apple will release new iMac models next week. Looks to be speed bumps and bigger hard drives with no new designs.
Q: Do you think Apple will redesign the iMac anytime soon? The current model with just some aluminum reskinning has been around since the G5 iMacs were released some years ago.
Apple buys P.A. Semi
Apple has purchased P.A. Semi, a custom chip design shop based in California. This company has in the past done some custom designs using the PowerPC chip that Apple abandoned for Intel’s X86 platform some years ago. Their current product is rumored to be a sophisticated low-power chip that Apple could build future iPods, iPhones, or other small mobile devices. This is potentially bad news for Intel as they have been trying to convince Apple to use their new Atom line of processors that is meant for the same market.
Q: Considering how close in public that Apple and Intel is, what would be Apple’s motive for buying this company?
