We have gone through a long time period between OS X updates, from Tiger OS X 10.4.4 to 10.4.5. Update 10.4.3 was buggy, and I chose to skip it and wait, using 10.4.2, until 10.4.4 arrived, which runs perfectly on all personal and work computers within my realm.

After doing *any* software update or installation, I recommend using Apple’s Disk Utility application (in the Utilities folder within your Applications folder) to click on the name of your hard drive upper left, and then click Repair Permissions. Again, your suggestions on hard drive and file maintenance are welcome below.
Tiger is terrific, and Apple does a great job keeping it up to date, but not all major OS updates are clear sailing. Waiting until the coast is clear is recommended.
