Snow Leopard’s installer does not appear to like multiple partitions on a Leopard startup drive.
My MacBook Pro has three partitions. One is my primary startup volume, another is a dumping ground for temporary large files, and a third is empty, awating Sno Leo installation. The 10.6 DVD installer wouldn’t allow me to install on either one last night. I was disappointed.
I did some web forum research, and learned that other users are having similar problems. The common remedy was to backup, reformat, dump partitions, install the OS, and migrate. I didn’t want to do any of the above.
Instead, I installed 10.6 this morning on an external FireWire 800 WiebeTech ToughTech Mini drive, which is running Snow Leopard right now as the startup drive. I had previously used SuperDuper to clone my MacBook Pro’s startup volume to this Wiebe drive. It is blinking like crazy, and is V-E-R-Y hot to the touch.
Most of you will not experience a similar set of annoyances, but you partitioners know who you are, and have been alerted. I’ll provide additional info on other potential remedies as I encounter them.
