There is no doubt that there are thousands of Mac fans who will not be able to make this year’s Macworld Conference in San Francisco. Folks who would love to go, sometime, and see what all the hoopla is about, and check out, for themselves, all the latest and greatest from Apple Computers, one of the most progressive technology companies in the world.
But it’s not only Apple showing their feathers. Hundreds of other companies, purveyors of hardware and software, and all the pertinent peripheral products, will be hawking their wares, busting a gut for attention and consideration. Such is the business of technology in the technological age.
But those of us joining the fray, analyzing, kicking tires, interviewing, and witnessing are there for more than just the “stuff.”
The trip involves sacrifice. Leaving one’s family and often a job to make this trip calls up a level of commitment which cannot be denied. It’s not only a financial one, but an emotional one.
But that’s not all there is. There is discovery, and joy, and a lot of fun. People I’ve never met, whose articles have revealed a bit of themselves and have entertained me over and over but whom I’ve never met, show up and become real folks. Appreciation and admiration grow as the veils of proximity are lifted.
So we all met today out in front of the South Hall of Moscone Center, those of us who could make the trip, to schmooze and cut up. It was not only a lot of fun, but we got to put faces on the photographers and the writers. As we were all telling stories and having a good time I thought that this is really what MyMac is all about. Disparate people sharing knowledge and experiences for whomever wants to cherry-pick whatever one sees fit to glean. And just having fun with it.
