As those on the MyMac.com staff mailing list know, I have been having DSL connection issues in my house for the past week. I won’t get into details, but let’s say that my connection is only giving me 40-120 kbs. I have used DSL for about three years now, and this is the first issue I have had.
I have troubleshooted to no end, and done suggestion after suggestion, idea after idea. No luck. A tech is suppose to come out here Tuesday to test the line outside the house. According to them the line is fine. I don’t accept that.
Anyway, that is not the point of the post. Here’s the point. Not having hi-speed internet these days is crippling. You don’t realize how much it is needed until you don’t have it.
I can’t download any podcasts, can’t watch video on websites, I can’t even update my own website. So many websites these days are geared towards hi-speed connections that I can’t even visit certain websites. I haven’t heard or watched any Macworld coverage from MyMac or any other site. By the way what is this MacBook Air people are writing about? (Just kidding.)
Even email is an issue. Friends constantly send me video clips or photos. I have to delete them from the web interface because downloading takes too long and clogs the system. Even a receipt from online shopping takes forever to download.
A few years ago you could get away with dial-up. In today’s world and today’s internet it doesn’t work so good. Even the MyMac.com homepage is a struggle for me to load.
So wish me luck. Hopefully, this will be fixed by the end of the week. I have a lot of podcasts to download and catch up on. That should keep me busy until the writer’s strike is resolved.
