Last tango in Argentina

hi there, dad. i gotta tell you about the tango place we went to last night! it was amazing!!! we showed up around 1:30 a.m. and the place was packed, the dance floor full of the most amazing tango dancers i have ever seen.

they were all ages, but a lot of them were on the geriatric side. we were shocked, in the states those old folks woulda never been out so late, definitely not cutting it up on the dance floor. and man, they were good!!!!

we had taken two tango lessons, but this place was for experts only, and we were told by an insider that it’s insulting for beginners to try and dance there, so we stayed off the floor. we didn’t care though, great people watching!!!

all these serious old guys in suits, dancing dramatically with their eyes closed, their partners dolled up in dresses and heels, you woulda loved it. sometimes you would see a young woman with an older man, or a young woman alone waiting for someone to ask her to dance.

our friend remiro told us that this is because tango is popular with the young ladies, but none of their boyfriends know how to do it, so they have to come to a place like this and find someone old enough to be their father (or grandfather!) to dance with.

then… the best part!!!! the dance floor cleared and two young men, tall and skinny and dapper in black suits, started tangoing on the floor. they were incredible!!! the best tangoers ever, jumping all around, switching sexes back and forth, and hamming it up for a combination tango-comedy. our local friend martin called them tango clowns, but that doesn’t do them justice because they were not only funny, but amazing dancers as well.

we left at 2:30 or 3:00 and they were still going strong. here’s one photo, the best one we got.

xoxo
