For a time I had HDTV from the cable company. The picture was great, blah, blah, blah but the price was outrageous. I was paying (well more accurately my wife was paying) 25 bucks a month for six channels. Which would have been acceptable if they were six decent channels but they weren’t. We got one network (NBC) and assorted channels-o-crap. To get any more HD programming was going to cost even more and I was not about to pony upwards of one fifty a month to the cable company. Especially since they never even kiss me after sending the monthly bill.
But the hi def look was nice and I’ve got to say I had a serious jones for the hi-res goodness. Renting DVDs is no answer (DVDs are not hi def) so I decided to give HDTV over the air a chance. I took a trip to the local megacenter and picked up a HD antenna and a HD receiver. Total cost: $200. Thanks tax return (special note: I used to think I was a bit moronic for overpaying my taxes, I now realize that it is imperative to stay ahead of the IRS my newfound wisdom is owed to DKE). The plan was simple; hook everything up and see what I get. At this point I’ll note I was pretty skeptical that I would get more than one or two channels over the air and very skeptical that I would get any Hi def goodness whatsoever. I fired the mess of plastic and cables up tuned the TV to AV2 and hoped for the best.
The machine did the scanning and returned a result of 12 channels. That was pretty freaking cool. Further investigation revealed that half of them featured high def content. Now I get all the networks (so I can watch sporting events in hi def, not possible with the cable company) and PBS HD (nice). Sure it set me back 200 bones but that is still only an eight-month payback so I consider it a nice deal. My advice: try over the air first. If you can’t get enough HD to satisfy then take the shafting from the cable company.
Hey, let me ask you a question: Do you feel a void in your life? A gnawing uncertainty? Do you wonder what it is all about? Is your life directionless? Well I can’t help you with any of that but if you want to get your mind off such depressing thoughts for a time I suggest iMovie on the Cheap. You’ll even learn a little about iMovie while killing time.
Apparently Not Mac News (a small part I play in mymac’s weekly podcast) is only enjoyed by Tim and Chad. I happen to know Tim despises it and I suspect Chad is faking it. Well, I like it. Not really, I can’t stand to listen to myself on the computer I leave the room for fifty seconds.
