HBO joins iTunes along with variable pricing

HBO shows are now part of iTunes and with them comes a new pricing model. Shows in the 30 minute range are $1.99 and shows in the 60 minute range are $2.99.

What does this mean for the other networks? I don’t think they will be sitting by when contract renewals come up and say “Keep all of our shows at $1.99, we’re happy with that.” I’d predict our favorite episodes of LOST and other shows of that length will be $2.99 in the future.

Of course, the $2.99 price could hurt sales, and Apple could use HBO as an example of why the price should stay at $2.99. I don’t think this will happen, but it could.

If newer shows are in this price range, how about a lower price for older shows? Make classic shows $.99. Older movies are $9.99, why not adapt that model with TV shows too?

Here’s another question. Will this new pricing be enough to lure NBC back to iTunes? Only time will tell.
