EMI/iTunes=DRM free in May

EMI and Apple have just announced that the entire EMI catalog that is available on iTunes will be DRM-free starting in May.

Of course this comes at a price. Namely a slight increase (roughly 25%) in price to $1.29 here in the US. At the same time the songs are going to be encoded at a higher bit rate (256 kpbs AAC) so on top of being able to do whatever you want with your tunes, they’ll sound better too.

If you already have a number of EMI copyright songs from iTunes, you’re not left out in the dark as you can re-download them at the higher bit rate for 30 cents each.

I hate to be a cheerleader, but this is great news for those that hate DRM…like everybody in existance other than RIAA executives.

Now if only we could get rid of the DRM from the movies and TV shows we get off iTunes. Hey, I can dream can’t I?
