After thorough research, I eliminated lower-priced PowerBooks and iBooks, each for different reasons. I don’t travel enough to require a portable. Higher-priced iBooks are still mediocre when performance and screen presence are major factors. Jumbo and mid-sized PowerBooks are darn good computers, but their displays don’t have the wowzer brightness and clarity my geezer eyeballs require.
Monster 20″ iMac is sensational in every way, but it’s a little expensive by the time you max out the memory and pay for essential AppleCare. Displays on small and medium-sized iMacs are good, but no match for the screen on the 20″, especially in difficult lighting environments. I told you I was being thorough.
That leaves the humble eMac, which is exceptional value for money, comes with good speakers, has a bright, clear display that can show different resolutions better than all competitors, and is now reasonably fast and powerful with maximum memory. (To be considered zippy in Panther, you’ll still need a 1.25 GHz processor, but the 1GHz eBook comes pretty close.)
Problem? Ubetcha! The eBook I tested today in a very quiet room had a constant, annoying fan. The search continues. Your comments are welcome in Article Discussion area below.
Solution?
For portable use, winners are 15″ and 17″ PowerBooks, but the one-piece wonder remains the 20″ iMac. Start saving, Nemo
