As good as the new crop of iMacs are, and even the speed bumped Mac mini, there is still one big problem Apple has not addressed in quite some time: new monitors!
Apple’s Cinema Display models are great. They display a great picture. But they are way overpriced, even by Apple, Inc. standards!
Let’s do some comparison shopping, shall we?
A 20-inch Apple Cinema display features 1680 X 1050 resolution. It has 2 USB 2.0 ports, as well as 2 Firewire 400 ports. It connects via a DVI connector.
Price: $599
A 22-inch Dell monitor has the same resolution, but no USB or Firewire ports.
Price: $299
Is it worth $300 for those four ports? No. A small Firewire and/or USB hub would cost less than $50.
The Apple 23-Inch Cinema HD is $899, has a 1920 X 1200 screen resolution, and the same ports and connectors as the 20-inch model.
Price: $899
The Dell 24-inch has the exact same screen resolution, no ports, and DVI.
Price: $569
Yeah, that’s cheaper than the Apple 20-inch!
One could try and make an issue that the Apple monitors perform and produce graphics better than the Dell monitors. Sadly for Apple, that is simply not the case. The image these Dell monitors produce is every bit as good as the Apple brand.
So why such a big price difference? It’s one thing for a Macintosh to cost more than a cheap-o PC, we all know the reasons for that. But monitors?
Let’s discuss below!
