Another good scifi show bites the dust

I will admit it, I love science fiction. I will even watch bad scifi from time to time, looking for some good in there, just to fill a need to see scifi.

But a recent show on ABC, Defying Gravity, which I thought was good scifi for a change, will not be coming back, and I think that is sad.

This show did not even finish its run in the US, ending at episode 8, while 5 more already completed episodes were aired only outside the US (although rumor has it they will air them later in the US.) You can watch the first 8 episodes here on HULU and I suggest you check them out.

The show, set in 2052, has amazing sets of an interplanetary ship looking a little like a modern version of the one from 2001, a Space Odyssey. Strangely, the story was inspired by ‘Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets,’ a fictional docudrama produced by Impossible Pictures for the BBC.

The story was about a group of astronauts who will make a multi-plant journey around our solar systems, and how their lives intertwined with the crew back on earth. While some thought the show was a little slow, it had some excellent complex interactions between them all, and how their lives effect each other. The show jumped back in flashbacks to give it background, and that may have been the killer for some people, as it did slow it down. But give the story time to unfold, and when you finish episode 8, you will definitely want to know more. (Note: the last 5 episodes are on the net if you are so inclined to searching for them, and it only got better towards the end.)

The twist in this show was an object called “beta”, an alien object that seems to have some serious effects on everyone, and some interesting surprises along the way surrounding the beta object.

The special effects are movie quality here; some of the best space effects I have seen on TV in a long time. This show should have had legs, as the shows creator, James Parriott, was an executive producer of ‘Greys Anatomy,’ and another executive producer, Michael Edelstein, worked on ‘Desperate Housewives.’ Too bad that pedigree did not pay off here, although I thought this was as good as either of those shows.

Sadly, I do not think this show will be coming back, and that is too bad. We still need some good scifi on TV that is NOT about vampires, or yet another rehash of old TV shows done over (although Battlestar was excellent.)

But do we really need V again? See it Nov 3rd at 8 PM! SIGH!
