An Excellent Flash Primer

I and other MyMac writers have written quite a number of articles or reviews on digital photography for this site. I’ve reviewed a number of books on the subject and will continue to do so.

But like so many other photographers I struggle with how to effectively use flash and other lighting equipment. There are so many variables that impact flash phtoography. So in the last several months, I’ve been reading discussion threads, thumbing through boring manuals for my flash system, and even watched a pretty good audio visual tutorial on the topic of using my Canon 430EX (and soon to be 580EX) Speedlites.

But all that I have read so far doesn’t equal the simple, albiet very non-professional looking tutorial website on flash photography by 35 year veteran photographer, Chuck Gardner.

Now Chuck focuses on using Canon flashes, but I would bet his tuorials could apply to any flash photography equipment that is similar to the Canon flashes.

I’m not about to waste your reading time describing the tutorials Chuck has developed. I’m just recommending that you click over to his home grown website Concepts of Lighting

If you don’t like reading articles online be preapred to print out 60+ pages of really good information about flash metering, hot shoe flash, lighting concepts, and shooting with two or more flashes (i.e. key light and fill light.)

A book publisher would do well to give Chuck a contract for putting his tutorials into a book format. Equally as well, as I recommended to him, I think his tutorials would be very, very useful in an audio visual DVD format. I really think there aren’t many books published to date that equal the information the Chuck provides.
