Life in the Mac Lane

Office 2001
Well, it has been a few weeks since I started using Office 2001 from Microsoft. I know some people detest Word, such as John Farr over at AppleLinks.com, and I can understand why. I am forced to use it at work day in and day out, and have found it a decent word processor for the most part. I was pretty used to Word 98, and was very curious about the new version, Word 2001. Now that I have it, I wonder what the hell the big whopdeedoo is all about?

I have yet to find anything really different that is of significant importance than would make me recommend this program to anyone. Have Word 98 already and love it? Don’t bother with 2001. Not worth the cost, you don’t “GET” anything. In fact, after using both Word and PowerPoint (another program I used daily at work) the only thing I found really “Gee-wiz” about it is the fact that you can save a PowerPoint file as a QuickTime movie. Then again, so what? I also found all three of the major parts of the program, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, much slower than the ’98 version.

So what do you get? Not a whole lot, to be honest. If you already own ’98, and like it, don’t bother with 2001. If you have AppleWork, or any other word processor, and are happy, don’t waste your money. Simple put, this program is not worth the price. (Now, I do like the new Microsoft Entourage email program, but it is essentially the free Outlook Express with a calendar added in.)

Dan Knight
I love to read a good columnist. One of the best, and has been for a long time, is Dan Knight, the creator of LowEndMac. Today, I was reading his view of voting (http://www.lowendmac.com/soapbox/vote.html) what a good piece of writing. Solid, good advise on most topics, I don’t think Dan gets enough attention as one of the best Macintosh writers out there. Heads and shoulders ahead of most of the writers in the print Mac magazines, and LowEndMac itself is brimming with some great talent and content. If you have not been there in a while, I urge you to do so.

Life is funny like that.
