TT – CRIME SCENE

From the Kansas City Star, June 14th, 2018

Frantic calls to the police from parents revealed that three young girls had been kidnapped from three homes overnight. These events were not associated right away with a crime unfolding at a local service station garage on East Front Street, where the owner or an employee had barracaded himself within.

Swat teams were called, and later a hostage negotiator, for it was revealed that the individual inside had the three missing girls with him. He claimed to have them wired to explosives and made demands for money and a plane.

A sniper was on the roof of an adjacent building, as well as a spotter. It was these men who radioed what was happening in the garage. Gun shots were heard, and the spotter said that an unknown, unarmed intruder had come through the wall of the garage and was quickly shot by the person holding the girls hostage. Immediately afterward, another intruder came through the wall, firing and killing the kidnapper. He then exited through the wall and was not seen again.

Swat teams entered the garage and determined that the individual, later identified as Charles Ruggles, was deceased. Sadly, the young girls were also found dead. Coroners will determine cause of death, and when the girls died, whether during or before the gun fight. Forensics has the garage sealed off and will make a determination of the crime scene.

As for the intruders, the spotter said they ‘were dressed funny.’ Neither the intruders nor their bodies were found, nor was it determined how they came through the outside wall of the garage, which seemed to be a solid block wall. There was not found any weapon other than the one Ruggles had. The bullet that killed Ruggles is of an unknown material, and of a caliber that does not match known weapons.

Our city mourns with the families of their young daughters, who died today.

A customer to the Dahn Nam service station and garage on East Front Street reported seeing the body of the attendant within the office, Sunday. Officers responding to the 911 call found employee Charles Ruggles dead, of a single gunshot wound to the head. A gun was found nearby, and was determined to be of unknown origin and caliber. Forensics has not found fingerprints or other clues, as yet.

After cordoning off the crime scene, another body was discovered buried behind the garage. It was determined to the that of the owner, Dahn Luk Nam. A shovel was found in the back of the garage, with mud on it, and Ruggles fingerprints. It is not yet known when Dahn Nam was killed.

In addition, there was found a notebook in Ruggles pocket, with the names and addresses of three local girls. The parents of these girls, ages 8 to 10, have been questioned about their association with Ruggles. Explosives were found on the premises, and a bomb removal team was called to remediate the scene.

At this time the killer of Ruggles has not been located. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Kansas City Police, at 1-888-GOT-A-TIP.
