Well, I’m fairly shocked and awed tonight

The Americans have shocked and awed the European peloton, declaring an American, Levi Leipheimer, the leader of the Amgen Tour of California. No matter that he crashed out nine kilometers from the finish line, the commisars of the race decided that since the race finished in his home town of Santa Rosa, CA, that the race would be neutralized at the crash.

“Gee,” Beth Lock, a bike racing enthusiast said, “What a great way to gain respect as a world class tour. The european peloton must be shocked and awed.”

I have no idea why I am picking at my fingernails tonight. I mean, it’s just bike racing, right? But jeezus, why do the Americans always have to be first? Levi didn’t earn the leadership of that race. Yet, he raised his arms on the podium, smiled to the crowd, and accepted the yellow jersey.

Levi bummed around the european peloton, after he left Postal, first on Phonak for one season, then on Gerolsteiner, for one season, then back to Discovery (formely Postal) thinking he might be top dog. Not!

I will gain respet for Levi if tomorrow he says he didn’t earn the yellow jersey in this fledgling American race.

The truth will set him free. But maybe he doesn’t want to know the truth.

Aw hell, it is just bike racing, carry on.
