Several weeks ago the Executive Committee at our company decided to spend some of the excess cash flow by upgrading all our computers. I shopped around and purchased a MacMini package deal from Small Dog with additional RAM.
The other two computers were HP Compaq desktops with Intel processors. I offered to buy them Macs, but they thought since all their prior documents and data were created using the Windows OS, the changeover would be too tedious.
The HP’s arrived on the 13th of April, the MacMini arrived on the afternoon of the 19th. I spent a couple of days prior to receiving it backing up all my documents and accounting from my two computers (a B&W G3 and a graphite iBook) onto a nice LaCie 40gig external USB hard drive.
In less than an hour I was up and running with the Mini. The package deal included a wireless keyboard. I am new to Bluetooth technology so setting that up took the longest in the process. (A USB keyboard is required to get the wireless set up, so don’t purchase a wireless if you don’t have access to a USB keyboard.) By noon on the 20th I had all my software installed and updated and was happily computing.
Today is Friday, the 22nd of April. This is the eighth working day since the HP’s arrived. They still aren’t talking to one another over the network. Outlook Express and the UPS software lost all the addresses that had been stored. There are a few other minor problems, but I’ve quit asking because the person who is setting up the WIndows machines has become a bit touchy.
I offered to buy them Macs and a copy of Virtual PC. I should have insisted.
