Discovery Channel Fading Fast

Saul Bellow has reached thermodynamic equilibrium. Too bad, he was a truly great writer, a very funny, very insightful writer. One of the best (THE BEST?) novelists America has ever produced (yeah, bite @$$ Pynchon). (Henderson the Rain King is a truly awe inspiring work). Man that’s two of my favorite writers in one year. I guess Nate Eaton is next. Sorry Nate.

In other news Discovery Channel has officially started to suck. Flipped it on tonight and low and behold more motorcycles. Well that wasn’t a surprise but this was an award show for Motorcycles. It had the whole award show thing going on: Bad hosts (Goldberg) delivering very stilted supposedly comedic lines. I hate award shows in general but the small bit I saw of this one made the others look watchable in comparison. I guess I shouldn’t be too hard on the old Discovery Channel, anything to pull a rating right? TV has basically become three shows: Get kicked off, weld something and redecorate. The first person that puts twelve bikers on an island with a TIG welder some steel and a badly decorated room is going to be hailed as a programming genius.

I suppose I find it extra depressing because I thought as the number of channels grew so would the number of decent choices. In fact I bought into this argument so much I opined that it might be time to let PBS slide into that long good night. (I’m fiscally conservative, call me nuts.) I expected that all the quality educational and informative stuff PBS did would be produced by A&E, TLC, HGTV and The Discovery Channel. I was wrong so I’m thankful no one listened to me. I’m still disturbed by the fact that 70 frickin’ channels are all trending to the same shows depending on what demographic they’re looking to capture.

On the other hand I remember back when choppers weren’t overexposed, it was like ’02 or something. (Gag stolen from Tim)

Hmmm is that enough whining and complaining by yours truly? Survey says: Yes, very yes.

Time for some linkage (no alliteration out of respect for the master)

Guy Serle and David K. Every are Kung Fu Masters…Wait a minute..That gives me an idea, maybe we should have a Streetfighter MyMac.com challenge. You know, set up brackets until one person is crowned MyMac.com champion. I would use my unique beer drinking style of fighting, it would make for great video. Well, I guess I should put my money where my mouth is…hold on a sec…lost to Todd, I’m out. You other folks continue. (My money is on Russ Walkovich, he’s used to heavy stuff). But if that idea doesn’t take off and Guy and Dave want to continue their training I’m here to help:

Let me know your progress fellas, and be honest, don’t stretch the truth.

Tampa Devil Ray outfielder Suspended for Steroids
Well someone was going to be first. I actually feel a little for Alex Sanchez, if you’re playing for the Devil Rays you’re marginal at best. Steroids for that guy is the difference between a major league paycheck and checking groceries at the Safeway, I can honestly see the temptation. Baroid Bonds and Jason Needleinme bother me much more. Those guys have loads of natural talent.
