Every once in a while a good Scifi show comes along that just gets canceled too early. Firefly was one such show that ended too early, and is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. We were lucky enough to actually get a follow-on move from the creator about the series called Serenity to tie up loose ends. It was sad to see that show end.
Well, another sci-fi show that I really liked was also canceled way too early, and just last year. It was really not given the time it needed to develop into a stronger show, typical of higher budget sci-fi shows. Defying Gravity was one of those shows for me that went just a little beyond the normal TV crap, and a long way beyond what most crappy TV sci-fi is usually about. In fact, it was even canceled before the last 5 episodes played on US television. Some have seen those on the web, but for those of you who did not, or may not have seen this show at all, I suggest watching this show from the start, through all 13 episodes. And that is easy as this show now available on DVD, complete with the last 5 unaired (in the US) episodes to tie up a few loose ends.
Unlike other Scifi shows on TV, this one had a lot of personal stories behind the fancy special effects. The sets were amazingly well done, making you feel like you were on a slowly coasting space ship towards Venus, and the special effects were first rate for a TV show.
Some felt the show was a little slow for their tastes, and I can understand that, as this first season spent a bit too much time showing us back stories on the crew, and why they all had their problems on this mission.
There is a great mystery on this ship as well, something that even these 13 episodes never answered, but it also added a sense of unknown to the series that was well played.
This is a show I highly recommend, and for only $37 on DVD, you will not be sorry you watched it. And if you want to see the show that inspired it, have a look at Voyage to the Planets and Beyond (2004), a Space “Docudrama” from the UK. There are a lot of similarities here, minus all the drama of the characters, and a real bargain at $18.
Maybe if enough people buy the DVDs (or download the episodes), Fox, the network that killed both these great shows ( I guess they never learn) might be willing to make a movie of this show too.
