Why The iPad Doesn’t Need a Camera

One of the biggest complaints about the iPad is the lack of camera for chatting, and I guess taking pictures. In my opinion, it doesn’t need it.

First, for chatting you would have to position the iPad so the camera sees your face. Most likely, this would not be sitting in your lap but in your arms. Not very comfortable for a long chat.

Second, (and this one is more personal) I don’t do much video chatting. In fact, I rarely text chat. If I do video chat I would rather be at my stable iMac. When I have chatted in the past with a MacBook the image constantly got pixelated from my not being able to hold the thing steady. Yes, I know you can dock the iPad, but that gives you reason number one again.

Third, it would be better to have a third party (or Apple) create an external clip-like- camera that clips to the iPod and can swivel for aiming at the person chatting. This would make for a much better video chat experience.

Speaking of chatting, why is there no official Apple iChat app in the App Store? Why do we have to rely on third parties for this?

Anyway, that is for another time and another post.
